NOTE 1: Arthur Coley was born in Minnesota Feb 26, 1899, son of Andrew and Maggie (Elvin) Coley, both born in Sweden. Arthur enlisted in the Army July 10, 1916, served in Co. B., 135
Inf, 34 Div. He was honorably discharged Jan 14, 1918. In 1922 he was admitted as a resident to the NW Region, U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. His disability was listed as
"amputation of arm, right 1/2 lower" and laryngitis. On Feb 4, 1924, he married Fay Evelyn Drummond in Jackson County, MO. On the 1930 census, as a Lodger in the Jackson Park Plaza Hotel, he listed
his marital status as "D" for divorced.
NOTE 2: F1; Fireman, first class. Third enlisted paygrade in the Engineering ratings in the Navy. This paygrade, the senior of the "Non-rated" paygrades (non-rated means that it's not
an NCO) is now called "Fireman" abbreviated "FN". It's called "Fireman" because they once primarily tended the fires that boiled the water that made the steam that made the shafts turn to make the
ship go. So there.
NOTE 3: AOM1 - Aviation Ordnanceman, Petty Officer 1st Class. (In 1948, this Rating abbreviation was changed to "AO"). AOM's performed many shipboard tasks associated with aircraft
weapons: they load missiles and bombs, arm macineguns, maintain and repair weapons systems, including bombsights and fire control mechanisms, and gun turrets aboard larger aircraft. Coy Allen served
aboard USS Pocomoke (AV9), a seaplane tender (support ship) serving in the Pacific during WWII.
NOTE 4: SF2C - Shipfitter, Petty Officer Second Class. Shipfitters perform a host of shipboard repair tasks: pipefitters, hull maintenance, welding, metalsmithing, part fabrication, and
many other jobs. Hendry served from 1943-1946 aboard USS Altamaha (CVE18) in WWII. Altamaha was an "Escort Carrier", sometimes referred to as "Baby Carriers". Smaller than the normal Aircraft
Carriers, CVE's did much of the less-glamorous work such as ferrying aircraft to various points around a theater of operation, training Naval pilots in Carrier operations, and often taking up the
slack for the larger, overworked carriers. CVE's delivered aircraft from the point of construction to the warzones.
NOTE 5: Double headstone with his wife Jemima. Headstone shows her year of birth as 1916; research shows DOB as Sep 17, 1916. She returned to Wisconsin after Simon died and lived on
Center Street in Randolph. Last address for her was 502 S. High St, which is the Golden Living Centers - Continental Manor of Randolph; this is an assisted living, nursing care, Alzheimers care
facility. If still living at age 97, Jemima Ennema is probably a resident there.
NOTE 6: S1 - Seaman First Class; same paygrade as F1 in note 2, but a Seaman is in ratings other than engineering. This non-rated paygrade is now called "Seaman". S2, Seaman
Second Class, is now called "Seaman Apprentice".
