THOMPSON CEMETERY (A-A); Shelby County, Texas was photographed May 14, 2016 by Bob Britnell and sister Sandy. We took digital pictures of each individual headstone and will provide copies to anyone who asks.

There are two Thompson Cemeteries here - one for African-American burials and the other for White burials. They are very close together, separated by thick woods.

DIRECTIONS: From SR21 on the east side of San Augustine, go north on SR147 about 10 miles. There's a green sign for "Thompson Cemetery" on the left pointing into the woods for the Caucasian cemetery; the African-American cemetery is just a short distance further up the road, also on the left. There is no sign for this cemetery, but it is close to the highway and very obvious, .

This cemetery was difficult to photograph; many headstones were eroded and almost illegible, while others were sunken into the ground and required excavation before we could read the inscriptions. The notation "(FHM)" indicates a small funeral home marker. Because there are so many temporary markers in this cemetery, and because such markers don't usually show complete dates, I have researched each one and have added complete birth and death dates when available. "(Photo)" indicates that there is a photograph of the person on the headstone.

In my extensive research I could not find any verification of the award to him of America's highest honor for valor in combat. This name does not appear on any MOH list-- especially the CMOHS (Congressional Medal of Honor Society) official website and list, and the US Army's official list of MOH recipients. NOTE 3: The census reports from 1880-1940 support the year of birth as 1857, but his death certificate has erroneous year of birth of 1870.

NOTE 4: Mrs. Davis died at age 110, just 3 months from her 111th birthday. Excerpt from her obituary: "She leaves to cherish her memory: five daughters, 34 grandchildren, 84 great-grandchildren, 55 great-great-grandchildren, 90 great-great-great grandchildren, 4 great-great-great-great grandchildren,a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends."
