We took digital photos of each individual headstone, and will provide copies to anyone who asks. The number in parentheses following each name is the reference number of the picture of that headstone; if you request a photo, please refer to that number and the name. DIRECTIONS: From the traffic light at the junction of SR21 and US96 in San Augustine, go north on 96 about 12 miles and turn right on CR1009. (Not an easy sideroad to spot; small road). Go 1 mile on this road to a "T" intersection; turn right onto CR1011 and go 7/10 mile to the junction with CR1005. Turn left, the church and cemetery are a stones throw down the road, on the right. From Center, TX: at the intersection of US96 and Loop 500 south of town, go about 8/10 mile on 96 to the SHORT Community, and turn right on CR1005. Continue on 1005 2.5 miles and turn right when the road turns; the church and cemetery are right around that corner.

There are many burials of early settlers in this area, and a number of them appear in our family tree. Several nearby cemeteries are the final resting places of others in our family, as are cemeteries in neighboring San Augustine, Nacogdoches, and Sabine Counties.

Names are listed alphabetically by last name only, but not by first name within the last name groups. This preserves the adjacencies of family members. Alphabeticizing by first name separates husbands and wives; we prefer to list them together. Footnotes are provided when I feel it appropriate to add information not included on the headstones.

NOTE 1: According to her death certificate, Angie was born in Louisiana Sep 7, 1905 (cemetery marker shows 1901) and died Mar 27, 1927 in Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas. The Dr. who signed the death certificate stated cause of death as "Railroad crossing accident. Killed instantly by T&NO frt train at dirt road crossing at Huntington." Her daughter "Clairee", born in June, 1926, died with her and is buried with her.

NOTE 2: Jones gave his age as 72 years in 1913 when he applied for a pension (pension was approved) based on his Confederate service, indicating he was born in 1841 (Gwinnett County, GA). He died January 19, 1922 at Choice, Shelby Co. TX. He enlisted in the Georgia infantry Dec. 6, 1861 in Savannah, GA, and in 1862 reenlisted for 3 years or duration of the war. He was captured at High Bridge, VA April 6, 1865, signed the Oath of Allegiance and was released June 25, 1865 at Newport News, Va. In 1880 he was farming in Lowndes Co., AL with wife Addie, 3 sons, and his step-mother. He moved to Texas about 1890.

NOTE 3: Married N.Z. Mills in 1895 after his 1st wife died in 1892. Some sources show her full name as "Marsha Mitchal Rowenna Mound" but I've found no origin for the "Marsha". She was probably born Mitchal (Michelle?) Rowena Maund, not Mound, and could have been born (or grew up) in Sabine County, TX. She died in Shelby County.

NOTE 4: The year of death shown on her headstone could be interpreted as either 1953 or 1963, as the 5 and the 6 are struck in the same spot. The headstone shows birth year as 1872. Her death certificate shows DOB as May 20, 1871, and DOD as Mar 2, 1963. She was the daughter of L. Caney Hughes & Temple Turbyville. She died in Carthage, TX at Panola County Hospital; her last residence was Martinsville, Nacogdoches County. She died at 91 years of age, the widow of Joseph Lambert Covington. (buried next to her) Joe was born Mar 25, 1873 in Cherokee County and died Feb 23, 1952 in Martinsville, Nacogdoches Co. They were married Aug 25, 1896 in Shelby County.

NOTE 5: Cousins Troy Vernon Graves and James Ronald Graves, and James W. Monk, riding together in a car driven by Monk, were involved in a head-on collision with an automobile driven by 17-year-old Charles D. McCollum of Brownfield. All four young men were killed in the accident, which occurred about 18 miles west of Snyder, Texas in the area of the county line between Scurry and Borden counties.

NOTE 7: Ephraim Fults was born in Warren Co., TN. (source for birth date & place, and details of military service is his application for a veteran's pension for service in C S A.) Enlisted in Co A, TX Cav, Hollands BN in Sep, 1863. After 6 months, his term expired and he enlisted in Co A, 28 Texas Cavalry, "Dismounted" and served until the end of the war. His unit was disbanded and he was mustered out at that time at Hempstead, Texas.

NOTE 8: Eva was the daughter of William Snider Samford and Willie Ann Bridges. She was married to William Paschal "Kinnie" Adams. After Eva's death, William married Viola Bridges. William and Viola are buried in Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center, Texas.

NOTE 9: Willie Ann Bridges was first married to William S. Samford, and the mother of Eva Samford Adams. After Samford died (1895) she married (1900) J.C. Stephens. Willie Ann is buried between her daughter Eva, from her first marriage, and her daughter Elmira from her second marriage.

NOTE 10: Hugh's first wife, Emma Lee Clark, is buried in Neuville Cemetery with a double headstone with Hugh. She died in 1963.
