SARDIS CEMETERY, San Augustine County, Texas, was visited and photographed July 6, 2013. As usual, we took individual pictures of each headstone and will provide pictures at no charge to
anyone who asks.
This cemetery is located in one of the most confusing areas of San Augustine County. Because of the proliferation of natural gas wells and a pipeline through the
area, there are many identical-appearing roads throughout the area, and almost none of them are marked. If you intend to visit this cemetery, I recommend you follow the following directions carefully
and retrace your route to return to the highway. On our first attempt to locate Sardis Cemetery (about a year ago) we were unsuccessful; we returned last week (after all the construction workers and
equipment had cleared out) armed with satellite pictures and a map with precise mileage marks. We were able to go directly to the cemetery; thank you, Google Maps! (If you get lost, forget
about asking for directions; we saw no indication that anyone lived in this area, and saw 2 workers in the whole area)
DIRECTIONS: From the traffic circle on US96 at SR21 in San Augustine, go north on 96 a very short distance and turn left on FM711. Go about 11 miles to CR245, on the left. This is a
small white-gravel road which is not prominently marked and is easy to miss. If you get to the sign indicating you are entering Shelby County, turn around and go just a few yards to the road. There
is a green sign indicating this is the road to Sardis and another cemetery, but the sign is off the road and obscured by trees. Turn west on CR245 and go about 5.7 miles. Do not deviate from this
road or you may end up driving in a lot of circles. At the 5.7 mile mark you will come to a poorly-defined crossroads; turn left. This is CR 245S; the cemetery is a short distance down this
road, on the left. There is a covered pavillion across the road from the cemetery, which is very close to the road; you can't miss it. In our 2 hours at the cemetery, 2 vehicles passed by on
the road - both maintenance workers in the gas field.
