OLD CENTER CEMETERY, Angelina County, Texas (sometimes referred to as "Rocky Springs Cemetery" for the community where it's located) was photographed January 14, 2016 by Bob Britnell and sister, Sandra Britnell. As usual, we took digital pictures of each individual headstone and will provide them free to anyone who wants them. This is a long-established cemetery with many graves dating from the 1800's; it is well-kept and still serving the community.

DIRECTIONS: from Loop 287 on the east side of Lufkin, take US69 east 7 miles to the edge of Huntington and turn left on FM1475. Go 1 1/2 miles and turn right on Tom Holland Road (CR174). Stay on this road for 2 miles, then turn right onto Old Center Cemetery Road (CR176). This road ends at the cemetery. There are a number of unmarked graves and many headstones so worn as to be almost unreadable. One older headstone is broken with the top piece missing; the date of death is probably "July 20 1908". The person buried here was probably a mature woman with children, as the epitaph reads "She was a kind and affectionate wife, a fond mother and a friend to all"

NOTE 2: SFM3: Shipfitter (Metalsmith) Petty Officer Third Class. (Later merged with other ratings into the Hull Maintenance Technician (HT) rating). Shipfitters performed maintenance and repair work aboard ships; SFMs were metalsmiths, doing machining and hull repair, including battle damage repair.

NOTE 3: Thomas Jefferson Alexander was born in Rankin Co., MS. He married Margarite Etta Warren Oct. 10, 1862, probably in Cherokee County, Texas. He enlisted in Co. K, 4th Texas Cavalry on September 15, 1861; Co K was formed in Alto, Cherokee Co. Thomas, who was probably called "TJ" or "Jeff", sometimes "Tom", died in Angelina County, Texas. On his application for a pension for service in the CSA, he gave his post office as Huntington, TX. the 4th TX Cavalry (Green's Brigade) probably spent most of its service in the Arizona area (a misnomer; they never saw Arizona) where they were detailed to guard against Indian or Mexican forays against the Texas borders.

NOTE 5: Jake's first wife, Ava Nell McMullen, is buried in Huntington Cemetery in the McMullen family plot. She died in 1950. His second wife, Mary Ann Violette, returned to Maine after her husband Jake committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest. She married a "Helwig" before her death in Penobscot County, Maine. I can't find her burial location.

NOTE 6: According to his death certificate, cause of death was a broken neck, caused when the car he was riding in turned over.
