New Smyrna Cemetery

NEW SMYRNA Cemetery, Nacogdoches County, Texas is identified by the sign on the fence as "Smyrna Cemetery - Jackson", but better knows as "New Smyrna" or just "Smyrna" as the large sign over the driveway has it. There are two other cemeteries very close-by: "Old Smyrna", which you passed to get here, and "Lowery-Grimes", which is just a short distance away on CR496. (All three cemeteries have been photographed and appear on this website)

DIRECTIONS: From Etoile on SR103 in Nacogdoches County, go south on FM 226 almost 5 miles and turn left onto CR 489, a red-dirt road. About a mile up this road, at the fire-lookout tower, turn right onto CR 490. (If you're using Google or Bing or Microsoft Maps, this road is identified as another CR489; that's wrong; the county road signs correctly identify this cross-road as CR490). Pass Old Smyrna cemetery on the right and continue on to the intersection with CR496. There will be a covered pavilion on the left; New Smyrna Cemetery is across the road through the large arch. We took digital pictures of each individual headstone, and will provide copies free to anyone who asks.

NOTE 1: Lera V. "Ellie" Wade was married to Aaron Coleman. After her death in 1914, he remarried. His second wife, Ida, died in 1918 and is buried next to Ellie, who has 2 headstones in this cemetery - one headstone (identical to that of her brother "J.L." and sister "Katie") is broken and doesn't show her name, but the dates are correct and her parents are identified. The other stone identifies her as "wife of A. Coleman".

NOTE 2: Jesus Campa was born in Mexico, probably January 1, 1907 as indicated by SSDI and TXDI. He used the name "James", and lived in Chicago, IL, according to the 1940 census.

NOTE 3: Buried in Garden of Memories Cemetery next to her second husband, L.J. Loving.
