LUCAS Cemetery, San Augustine County, TX. was photographed and recorded on Saturday, 23 September, 2006. (Updated May 28, 2021,  and  again on Oct 27, 2021 to remove erroneous  listings for 6 listings for "Reynolds")
The original metal sign that arches over the gate spells the name "Lucus", but was corrected to read "Lucas" between our first visit and the most recent visit.
References to this cemetery indicate there are 2 Lucas cemeteries in close proximity to each other. However, we have been able to find only this one and suspect that the other cemetery is now under the waters of the lake. There are quite a few tombstones that mark graves that seem to have been moved here from another cemetery, which we have found to be common in the cemeteries near the lake. There are also a number of graves with missing or deteriorated headstones. Some of the flat stones have disappeared under a couple of inches of dirt and grass; we probed with a knife to find some of the EVANS and SMITH stones.
DIRECTIONS:   From Broaddus, on FM Rd. 83, go E. about 3 miles; From Pineland, go about 14 miles W. on 83 (just past the "Oak Grove Baptist Church" sign) to FM Rd. 2390: Turn South on 2390 and go about 4.5 miles to FM Rd. 2189; go left on 2189 about 1.75 miles, then take CR490 (straight across at the intersection of 2189/491/4750/490) and go perhaps 3/4 mile to the end of the road.
The number in parentheses following each name is the number of the headstone picture in my files)

NOTE 1:  Born Oct 16, 1908 in White City, San Augustine County, TX & died Jan 26, 1925, also in White City. He was the son of Milton S. Smith & Mary Rebecca Townsend Smith. The 1910 census showed his name as "Manon", and it's spelled that way on "Find-a-Grave". A family tree shows his name as "Manning". His headstone spells his name "Mannah" as I've listed it here.
NOTE 2:  Dorsey Columbus Stringer, son of John Hutchins Stringer & brother of my Maternal Grandfather Henry Abner "Elder Ab" Stringer. "Dossie's" wife, called "Jannie", was Mary Tabitha Carrell, d/o W.W. & Wildia Carrell; Jannie was her nickname
NOTE 3: Citizen of the Republic of Texas
NOTE 4: Citizen of the Republic of Texas. Holden McGee's headstone shows year of birth as 1790; that would have meant he was 108 when he died. However, 2 other reliable sources show 1796 as year of birth; and his parents were not married until 1793. Holden moved to Louisiana and participated in the War of 1812, including the battle of New Orleans. He married Sarah Howell in 1824.
NOTE 5:  Initials only, but his WW1 draft registration shows his name as "Marion R.Z. Bryan". R Z was nicknamed "Shorty", as he stood an even 5 feet tall.
NOTE 6: Name is "Carrell" but spelled "Carrill" on tombstone. Double headstone with his wife Mary Jane; she married "Smith" after his death.
NOTE 7:   Her name does not appear on the headstone; just the words "Mother of John W. & Wife of J.W. Bryan, Sr."  Elizabeth was enumerated on the 1860 census, so the date of death shown on the headstone is incorrect. She apparently died in 1861, not 1859.
NOTE 8a:  Inscription: An Inf Son was Born to Dossie & Jannie STRINGER. "Asleep in Christ"
NOTE 8b:  Inscription: An Inf Dau was Born to Dossie & Jannie STRINGER. "Asleep in Christ"
NOTE 9:  Served in Co K, 26 TX Cav, CSA. Married Elizabeth Parker in 1865. Appointed Postmaster in Caddell in San Augustine County in 1902. (Caddell was on Caddell Creek and a country road twenty-five miles south of San Augustine in far southern San Augustine County.  The site was inundated by Sam Rayburn Reservoir in the 1960s; Caddell Cove, an inlet on the lake, preserves the name of the community.)
Note 10:  Bobby Earl Longino (Jan 31, 1938-Dec 4, 2015), husband of Linda, is buried here; at the time this update was entered there was no marker at his grave.
