KITCHENS CEMETERY, Angelina County, Texas, was photographed July 4, 2013. We took digital pictures of each individual headstone, which are available to anyone, on request, at absolutely no
cost.
DIRECTIONS: From Zavalla in Angelina County, at the intersection of US69 and Main Street (at the caution light), go south on 69 about 7.8 miles and turn right on "Kitchens Cemetery
Road". The cemetery is about a third of a mile down this dirt road, on the left.
There's a number of illegible headstones, and a number of headstones of burials who have been identified by name but no record of dates of birth or death. When an inscription is only
partially legible, we take the identifiable data and are often able to fill in the blanks with online research. Any additional information on those individuals that our research turns up is usually
included in our transcription.
Names are listed alphabetically by last name only, so a person should look at the entire list of identical surnames when searching for an individual. We do it this way so that family members
buried together appear that way here and names on double headstones appear next to each other.
Numbers in parentheses following each name correspond to photograph file numbers to help us provide pictures. the abbreviation "(FHM)" indicates a funeral home marker; (Photo) indicates the
headstone includes a picture of the deceased.

NOTE 1: SN is enlisted paygrade E-3, of 9 enlisted paygrades in the US Navy
NOTE 2: This funeral home marker is badly dented and faded. A small granite marker has just the name "John Dykes". The handwritten name on the metal marker appears to be John Cecil
Dykes; year of birth is either 1920 or 1928, and year of death probably 1985. This is possibly the grave of Cecil John Dykes, born Jan 1, 1920, died May 25, 1985 in Huntington. This is a "best-guess"
on an almost-unreadable marker.
NOTE 3: Willard enlisted in the Army Feb 14, 1941 for assignment to the Philippines. He was captured by Japanese forces on the Bataan Peninsula of Luzon Island and participated in the
infamous Bataan Death March that began April 10, 1942. He died as a Japanese POW about a year after capture and is listed as Killed in Action (KIA).
NOTE 4: MOMM3 - Motor Machinist Mate, Third Class. Maintained and repaired gasoline and diesel engines on small craft and diesel-powered ships. This rating is now called "Engineman",
abbreviated "EN"
NOTE 5: SRA (Senior Airman, paygrade E-4) is the USAF equivalent of an Army Specialist or Corporal, a USMC Corporal, and a Navy or Coast Guard Petty Officer Third Class. In all services
E-4 is the lowest of the NCO grades. (except for Army Specialist, who is in paygrade E-4 but is not considered an NCO.)
NOTE 6: BSM - Bronze Star Medal. 4th highest military award for valor in combat.
NOTE 7: Born Sarah Jane Spears March 1, 1850, in Davidson County, TN; died October 8, 1912, in Jasper, Texas. Married Wm. B. Kitchens July 26, 1869, in Franklin Co., TN
NOTE 8: Eddith is buried in DAVIS Cemetery in Colmesneil, Tyler County, TX next to his second wife, Ruthie L. Worthy. They were married in Dec., 1969; Ruthie died in 2006.
