HOMER CEMETERY, Angelina County, Texas was photographed April 6, 2016 by Bob Britnell and his sister Sandra Britnell. As always, we took digital photographs of each headstone and will provide copies of individual pictures to anyone who wants them. This cemetery is located in the HOMER area south of US69 between Lufkin and Huntington. Homer was the county seat of Angelina County from 1856 to 1892; the town was named after Homer, Louisiana, the Parish seat of Claiborne Parish. Although Homer once had a courthouse, schools, churches and businesses laid out in 24 blocks, there seems to be no visible trace of the town remaining at the site.

DIRECTIONS: From Lufkin, TX, go south on US69 about 4 miles and turn right on FM326. Go about 3/4 mile and turn left on CR217 - Homer Cemetery Road. The cemetery is just a short distance down the road.

Although there are less than 300 burials here, it took an unusually long time to get all the pictures. Many of the markers were so badly eroded as to be unreadable, requiring careful cleaning before we took pictures. Even after cleaning, many of the inscriptions were still illegible in the photographs, so we resorted to tracing the letters & numbers with our fingertips and writing the information on paper. A number of headstones are just too eroded to be read despite our efforts, and some broken stones had been repaired with plaster or concrete, covering some of the dates.

NOTE 1: Leonidas Hannibal Washington Guinn served in CSA in 7th Regiment, Texas Cavalry (7th Mounted Volunteers). He married Sarah Elizabeth Gann July 20, 1865 in Angelina County, Texas.

NOTE 2: Flora DuBose was born in Hunt Co. Texas, daughter of A.H. & H.A. DuBose. They moved to Homer, Angelina Co. Dec 15, 1865. Flora married I.J. Muller April 19, 1882 in Homer, Texas.

NOTE 3: Harrison Beauregard "Bodie" Davis and his wife Saphrona "Frona" or "Fronnie" Elizabeth Havard Davis.

NOTE 4: Depending on which census you believe, William Hiram Brown was born in either 1809 or 1813 in New York. He died Feb 24, 1883. He was the husband of Katie Cathern Brown. He served as Captain in Co F from March 1, 1862 until August 27, 1863, according to the published history of the 13th TX Cavalry. Hiram and Katie were in Texas as early as 1836.

NOTE 5: MUSCN is an abbreviation used on veterans headstones to indicate that the person was a musician - in this case, probably the company bugler. His headstone also has a "Citizen of the Republic of Texas" medallion. He is buried next to his wife.

NOTE 6: Laura was the first wife of Dr. W.W. Manning. I found almost no mention of her, but she does appear on the 1860 and 1870 census reports as his wife. He married Clara Daniel Dec 13, 1871, so it is safe to assume that Laura died between the 1870 census and the date he married Clara. Dr. Manning's second wife, Clara Daniel Manning, died Aug 9, 1911 in Ft. Worth, TX and is buried there in the Oakwood Cemetery.

NOTE 7: Laura C. Rush was the daughter of Dr. W.W. Manning and his first wife Laura A. Laura C. Manning was the first wife of Capt. Charles A. (C.A.) Rush. He is buried in Glendale Cemetery with his second wife Fannie and their son Willie. A posting at "Find-a-Grave" erroneously indicates that Laura C. Rush was the wife of Caroline A. Rush, based only on the initials "C.A.".
