GETHSEMANE Cemetery, San Augustine County, Texas, was photographed and transcribed on Feb. 19, 2011. (Some updates were added June 13, 2020. There are more than 50 known unmarked graves in this cemetery. Those names do not appear here, as this website is intended for headstone locations, so burials without headstones will not appear here. However, a more comprehensive listing of those burials can be found at:

Gethsemane is an almost-abandoned African-American cemetery, overgrown with tall weeds, but with some signs of occasional visits.  It's located on a narrow dirt and partly-gravelled road far back in the deep woods with little sign of human habitation. About half-a-mile up the road is the old Rocky Mount Baptist Church and cemetery, which has also been transcribed and photographed.
DIRECTIONS:  From Hwy 21 at Denning, go north on FM 354 a little more than 5 miles, and go right on CR 203 almost 2 miles (past Rocky Mount Baptist Church).  The cemetery is on the right; the dirt driveway is in bad shape, and there is one hole in the ground that appears to reach China.
The abbreviation "FHM" indicates a metal funeral home marker.  All information is recorded exactly as it appears on the headstone, but information in parentheses was added by this researcher.  Names are listed alphabetically by last name only, to preserve adjacencies of family members.  (Photo) indicates the headstone includes a photograph. The number following each name is the reference number of the picture of that individual grave marker; these pictures are available, free, by mail or email. We never charge a fee for any service we provide.
