GANN CEMETERY, Angelina County, Texas was photographed over several visits in October and November, 2012. This large cemetery, located behind O'Quinn Baptist Church in Pollok, Texas consists of some 3,000+ burials. There is a comprehensive directory in the covered pavillion just outside the fence in a corner of the church parking lot.

DIRECTIONS: in Lufkin, from the intersection of Loop 287 and US69, go north on 69 about 5 miles to the Gann Cemetery sign indicating the left turn to the cemetery down the narrow road just before the church parking lot.

The horseshoe-shaped driveway into the cemetery divides the cemetery into three distinct sections - North, Middle, and South. Because of the size of the cemetery, we have divided our transcription into those three sections, with the Middle section being the largest, North section next in size, and the South section being the smallest.

The number in parentheses following each name corresponds with the photograph of that headstone; the photographs are available to anyone who wants them. Note 14: Edna Loving Stringer was, at her death, the wife of Hollis Vincent Stringer, my first cousin. She is buried beside her first husband, Claude Loving. Hollis' first wife was Billie Faye Wright, also buried here.

Note 15: FN: Fireman, paygrade E-3 in the engineering ratings; SN, Deck/Admin/Medical; AN, aviation ratings.

Note 16: Bianca Elizabeth Virlinda McKenney Flournoy was born in Monroe County, GA, and died in Shackleford County, TX.

Note 17: W.W. Flournoy served in Co. A. 6th AL Cavalry, and Co. H, 53 AL Cav, C S A, and was awarded a pension at age 80. He died at his home in Pollok, Angelina County, TX.

Note 18: Hanna Riley was the mother of Fred S. Riley, with whom she and her second husband were living for the 1880 federal census. Her daughter Josephine Holly was also there. Her second husband may possibly be the William Carroll Holly, CSA veteran, buried at Wallace Chapel Cemetery.

Note 19: Willie Mae Fenley was born Feb 7, 1902, the daughter of William Odom and Vinnie Butler. She died Aug 2, 1976 while a resident at Blalock East Nursing Home in Jacinto City, Harris County, TX. She had lived in Baytown.

Note 20: SH3- Ships Serviceman, Petty Officer Third Class. SHs in the Navy perform a variety of service-type jobs, including barbers, laundrymen, store operators, and other personal-service duties. In earlier times SHs would have been tailors and cobblers and, on larger ships, they would have operated soda fountains.

Note 21: US Army Captain Stanley Clark Anderson served with the 80th Division, 358th Infantry in WWII. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal 3 times. The Bronze Star is the 4th highest award for bravery in combat, behind the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross (or Navy Cross), and Silver Star.

Note 22: Laura Frances Mann was first married to John Sims. Her death certificate shows her name as "Laura Sims Ring". I couldn't find Mr. Ring's first name. She died at Henderson Memorial Hospital in Rusk County.

Note 23: CHMACH- An obsolete Navy Rating. This is most likely an early abbreviation for Chief Machinist Mate, which would be abbreviated MMC in today's Navy. Note 1 above shows the most common duty of the Navy MM. However, in earlier years they were gasoline and diesel engine mechanics, refrigeration technicians, aviation mechanics - even opticians, watchmakers, and instrument technicians.

Note 24: CM3- Carpenter's Mate rating, established in 1885. In the Construction Battalion (Seabees) they were builders, draftsmen, surveyors, carpenters, cement workers and other construction skills. They were also boatbuilders, plumbers, carpenters, joiners, caulkers, painters, and other skills in ship repair. in 1948 this rating was changed to DC (Damage Controlman), which was in turn merged with Shipfitter to form a new rating, Hull Tecnician (HT). CM became "Construction Mechanic" in 1958, engine mechanics in the Seabee field.

Note 25: OSSN- Operations Specialist, Seaman. (paygrade E-3) Ops Specialists, once called "Radarman" (RD), gather, process, analyze, and disseminate information concerning the operations of a Navy warship. They work in a ship's Combat Information Center (CIC) where they maintain displays of stragegic and tactical information.
