Coleman Cemetery
COLEMAN CEMETERY, San Augustine County, Texas
Recorded March 22, 2006, by Bob Britnell (misterbob@suddenlink.net) and sister,
Sandra G. Britnell.
This is another old cemetery, with graves of some early settlers in East Texas.
There are many unmarked and unreadable graves, including, possibly, the grave of our great-
great grandmother, Almedia Amanda (Hopson) Stringer, whom we are sure is buried either here or in Macedonia Cemetery.
DIRECTIONS: From Broaddus, go east (from Pineland go west) on FM83 to FM705; go
south on 705 about 6.5 miles to FM3173 and turn right. Go about 5 miles until the
pavement ends; continue on a very short distance on the dirt road to the cemetery.
There are a number of funeral home markers with the name "Unknown" and no other information.

NOTE 1: Martha "Patsy" Ferrell, wife of William Green Hopson, and mother of Almedia Amanda Hopson, who married Abner D. Stringer in GA. Abner & Almedia
migrated to Texas, and became my great-great grandparents. The widowed Martha accompanied Abner & Almedia to Texas, along with her children. Her husband, William Green Hopson, died in Florida
fighting in the Creek Indian War, and is buried in Leon County, FL in the Strickland-Ferrell cemetery. He has a memorial marker here in Coleman cemetery. Wm. Green & Martha Hopson were my
maternal gr-gr-great grandparents.
NOTE 2: J.M. was probably James Manning Coleman. The round concrete hand-engraved marker is broken and almost impossible to read. Best guess- born Dec. 7, 1851; died Feb 2,
1873.
NOTE 3: Probably Jacob Manning Coleman, born abt 1805 in SC; died 1880 in San Augustine Co. and his wife Sarah Henshaw, born abt 1808 in SC. Information from the 1860 census. Married May 27,
1834 in Monticello, Territory of Florida.
NOTE 4: Military marker reads: "William Augustine Hopson; Pvt Co G Crump's Cav & Co E 10 Texas Cav; Confederate States Army". His middle name was actually "Augustus".
NOTE 5: Wife of Oliver H. P. Boren. Frances Leah Hopson was the daughter of Wm. Green & Martha Hopson, and was my gr-great Aunt.
NOTE 6: Many parents named a son after Oliver Hazard Perry, the War of 1812 "Hero of Lake Erie".
NOTE 7: SF3 is the rating abbreviation for the US Navy rating (the individual's occupational specialty) of "Shipfitter". Shipfitters performed maintenance, repair, and fabrication duties aboard
ships and shore installations of the US Navy. In 1972 this rating was merged with the rating of Damage Controlman (DC) to form the rating of "Hull Maintenance Technician" (HT). In 1988 the two
ratings were again separated, with the Damage Controlman rating re-instated. The HT rating continued the extensive duties of the earlier Shipfitter rating. The "3" indicated the Rate (paygrade, or
rank) of Petty Officer third class.
NOTE 8: Lucinda Hockaby, wife of J.J. Marshburn, who is buried at Little Flock Cemetery. Lucy & J.J. Marshburn were the in-laws of my great-grand Aunt Martha Ann Stringer, wife of Archie
Marshburn. Lucy was a daughter of Mary Lucinda Barnes, who is buried here.
