CHINQUAPIN CEMETERY, San Augustine County, Texas, was Photographed and transcribed on October 20, 2011, (updated December 20, 2018) by Bob Britnell and sister Sandra
Britnell. As usual, we took pictures of each individual headstone, and will provide copies upon request, at no cost.
DIRECTIONS: from San Augustine, go south on US96 about 9 miles to CR415 on the right. (just before the intersection with SR103). Turn right and go about a quarter-mile and turn right on CR416.
The cemetery is about a mile down the road, on the left. If you continue down this road and go left at CR417, you will come out on SR103. Approaching from Broaddus or Lufkin, this would
be the best access to the cemetery.
In May, 1839 Minnie Loggins, age 18, daughter of Martin and Susanna Loggins died and was buried in this plot. Her brother Cade died the following month and was also buried
here. Other family members were buried in the plot, which became known as the "Loggins Family Burial Ground". In 1917 the site and an additional 5 acres of land were donated to the San Augustine
School System, and a 2-story school was constructed. The Chinquapin school, named for the small settlement, remained in use until 1957; at that time the students and teachers were transferred to
other district schools. In 1962 the property was returned to the Loggins family; in 1977 the burial grounds were transferred to a volunteer board of trustees. The cemetery was expanded to 6 acres and
renamed "Chinquapin Cemetery" after the community. This cemetery has been referred to as "Redlands" cemetery, but there is no indication that it was ever called that officially. Some believe that it
may have been called that because of the amount of Cherokee blood in many of those buried there. (Google Maps shows this cemetery labeled as "Redland Cemetery"). There is an African-American
Redland Cemetery located in the community of the same name, west of San Augustine and 12 miles north of this location.
Susanna Willingham Loggins was Cherokee Indian. Intermarriage was not uncommon in areas populated by Cherokees, many of whom adopted white names and lifestyles. Others who
followed Martin and Susanna from Tennessee also had Cherokee bloodlines.
Burials are listed alphabetically by last name only. (FHM) indicates a metal funeral home marker; (Photo) means there is a photograph on the headstone.
(Information in parentheses does not appear on the headstone, but was added by the researchers as amplifying or clarifying information, as a result of additional research)
Many of the LOGGINS' headstones are accompanied by a small flat marker identifying the individual as a "Citizen of the Republic of Texas" (CRT) and/or a "Soldier of the
Republic of Texas" (SoRT). These markers were placed by the Alexander Horton Chapter of the Sons or the Republic of Texas (SRT).
The number in parentheses following each name is the reference number of the picture of that person's headstone. Pictures are provided free upon request.

NOTE 5: DSC-BSM & OLC-PH. DSC - Distinguished Service Cross-Army equivalent of Navy Cross & AF Cross. Second only to Medal of Honor, awarded for "extreme gallantry &
risk of life in combat with an armed enemy force". BSM- Bronze Star Medal: 4th highest award for bravery in combat; the OLC (Oak Leaf Cluster) attached to the BSM indicates a second
award. PH- Purple heart, awarded to service members wounded in action.
NOTE 6: FPG2 - Pipefitter, Shipboard: bend, fit, repair pipes and tubing, including forging and welding, aboard Naval ships. Petty Officer Second Class
NOTE 7: Eugenia Fonville's mother Thursa was full-blood Cherokee Indian. Her parents and daughter are buried at the Fonville Cemetery. When she married Argyle Loggins, she was the widow
of F.M. Wood. There is considerable Cherokee heritage in the Loggins and other nearby families.
NOTE 8: Some family files claim this is "Cade Loggins"; however, his mother was only 10 (b. 1792, Married in 1800) in 1802. It is obvious, (at least to this researcher) that Martin Loggins, b.
in 1772, didn't marry an 8-year-old girl 20 years his junior, who gave birth to their son when she was 10.
NOTE 9: Killed in Belgium in the Service of Our Country. Co. C, 23rd Armd. Engr. Memorial Plaque Donated By His "Buddies".. (Photo, in uniform)
NOTE 10: David Lucas was a Sgt, USMC in WWII. He is buried in Hayes Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock, Galveston County, Texas.
NOTE 11: James Austan Phelps married Mary Elisabeth Cousins Nov. 21, 1866. He served in the Confederate Army in the War of Northern Aggression and received a pension after the war. Date
of death was stated on his widow's application for a widow's pension following his death. On the 1910 census, Mary Elisabeth stated that she was the mother of 16 children, with 11 still
living.
