Chapel Hill Cemetery
CHAPEL HILL CEMETERY, San Augustine County, Texas, was photographed and recorded October 30, 2015 by Bob Britnell and sister Sandra. We took digital pictures of each individual headstone, and will provide copies to anyone who wants them. DIRECTIONS: from San Augustine on SR21 on the east side of town starting at Clark St., go 6 miles east; CR141 will be on the left, the driveway to Chapel Hill Church and cemetery will be on the right just a stone's throw further. The church sits up a steep driveway on top of the hill, the cemetery surrounds the church on three sides. There is a lot of history to this church and the immediate vicinity; the first recorded burial was in 1838. Veterans of the American Revolution, the Texas Revolution, and various Indian wars are buried here. According to a sign on the west side of the church, this was "Former Site of The Thompson Settlement And Burial Ground -- 1826 - 1860.... Primitive Baptist Church and Thompson Academy Organized in 1836". The Chapel Hill Methodist Episcopal Church, South was located on the property; a new church was built with the entire community contributing funds, material, and labor in 1937. Although the church no longer holds regular services, the Chapel Hill Cemetery Association maintains the graveyard and church building; the cemetery remains active and continues to serve the area.
