ATTOYAC CEMETERY, San Augustine County, Texas, has a special place in our hearts.  This is the final resting place of our Maternal Grandfather and Grandmother, our Grandfather's second wife, 3 of our mother's four brothers, 3 of her 5 sisters, a number of first cousins, and an unknown number of more distant relatives.  For several years, the community room of the church was the site of the annual STRINGER family reunion, and for a short time, one of the 39 first cousins, Milton Poindexter, was pastor at Attoyac Baptist Church. This is also probably one of the most visited and well-documented cemeteries in this area. (This transcription has been updated twice, most recently on September 11, 2017).  As we always do, we photograph each individual headstone and record the genealogical information exactly as it is inscribed. (We have added the information in parentheses; it does not appear on the headstones.)....We are independent cemetery researchers and recorders; we have no connection with the administration of any cemetery listed here, therefore we cannot assist in plot purchase/or assignment.

DIRECTIONS: There are two suitable routes to Attoyac from San Augustine.  First route:  from the traffic light at the intersection of SR21 and US96, go west on 21,  10.5 miles and turn left (south) on FM1196. Go about 6.5 miles; the sign for Attoyac Baptist Church will be on the left.  Turn left and go a short distance to the cemetery. Second route:
Just south of the intersection of US96 and SR21, turn right (west) on FM1277.  Go about 13.5 miles to the junction with FM1196 and turn right.  Go a short distance; the sign for the church and cemetery is on the right.  Turn right and go to the cemetery. The abbreviation "(FHM)" indicates a small metal funeral home marker.  The number in parentheses after each name is the reference number for the picture of that headstone. Note 12: Florence Lucretia Granberry Townsend was the daughter of William Stafford Granberry & Harriet Pope Granberry, both buried here. The headstone doesn't show dates of birth/death; those dates were discovered through independent research.
Note 13: "Served in European Theater, Co. E., 325th Glider Inft; Lost in Holland, WWII. He Gave His Life That We May Live." (These words are engraved on his headstone)
Note 14: Johnnie Ruth Pate Husband was born  Mar 15, 1933 in San Augustine, TX & died in Harris County, TX Jul 19, 2003. She also has a headstone, shared with her husband Buford Moris Husband, in Chireno Upper Cemetery in Chireno, Nacogdoches County, TX. I am not sure in which location she is buried.
Note 15: Gladys Molly Poindexter was the sister of Eli William Poindexter who married my Aunt Ora Stringer, my mother's older sister.
Note 16: Her obituary shows her date of birth as Oct 8, 1929; her headstone shows it as Oct 8, 1931.
Note 17: Lucious Stanhope Fox was born in Burke County, NC. He was first married to Eliza Ann Sowell & second to Amanda Evelyn Neely.
Note 18: Augustus Woodville Cottingham married Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Allen on February 3, 1876, in Talbot County, Georgia. He married Nina Hunt about 1886.
