Antioch (Attoyac) Cemetery
ANTIOCH (Attoyac) Cemetery, San Augustine County, Texas. This is an African-American cemetery located beside a long-abandoned (and derelict) church building, in west San Augustine County. This is the smaller of two "Antioch" cemeteries in San Augustine County, the other being the Antioch Church of Christ Cemetery on TX147 just north of town.
DIRECTIONS: From Loop 287 on the east side of Lufkin, Texas, go east on TX103 (E. Atkinson Dr.) 25 miles to the caution light at Crossroads Church, and turn left (north) onto FM1277. Go a little less than 2 miles and turn left (north) onto FM1196. Go north on 1196 almost 5 miles to the church and cemetery on the right. It is not easy to see the old building from this direction without looking back, because of the angle of the eroded driveway. From Nacogdoches: from Loop224 on the east side of Nacogdoches, go east on TX21 about 21 miles and turn right (south) on FM1196. Go a little more than 2 miles; the church and cemetery are on the right.
There are more burials in this cemetery than we have listed here, but our website is intended to list only those burials with a headstone that we can photograph. We have a digital picture of the marker of each name listed here, and will provide copies of requested pictures (digital pictures by email or prints by regular mail) to anyone who asks, at absolutely no cost. The cemetery is not abandoned, having some fairly recent burials, but is somewhat neglected.
Near the gate to the cemetery is a headstone with two names, engraved as follows:

WOODS, Mary Ann Dodd (94); 1928 -- 1970
NOTE 1: According to his death certificate, Charlie Veal died June 1, 1935 at age 76, indicating he was born in 1859.
NOTE 2: Henry Dodd was inducted into the Army August 1, 1918, at Sante Fe, NM. He served overseas in WWI from Sep 13, 1918 until his death (caused by Lobar Pneumonia) Oct 18, 1918. His service was with Co C, 805th Pioneer Infantry, which consisted of African-American troops commanded by white officers. "Pioneer Infantry" units trained as Infantry soldiers, but also performed other functions such as combat engineers, other construction, and maintenance.
NOTE 3: Some information online indicates she died in Houston; however, I have found no official record of her death. I have included her in this transcription with the caveat that she may be a living person. If I receive information to clarify this, I will correct this record or, if she is living, remove her name.
NOTE 4: The headstone of Solomon & Lizzie is outside the cemetery fence in a separately-fenced area next to the church building.
