DIRECTIONS: From State Highway 21 on the east side of San Augustine, go north on State Hwy 147, about 12 miles to the sign for Adams Cemetery on the left. The cemetery is at the end of the steep driveway.

NOTE 1: 714 Railway Operating Battalion was a part of the MRS - Military Railway System. This system appeared first in the Civil War, was re-activated in WWI, and again for WWII. These BNs were formed by railroad companies, and activated when needed to maintain and operate railroads during wartime. The 714th Bn was formed by the CStPM&O (Chicago, St Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha) Railroad. Each Bn had 4 companies: HQ company for signaling, dispatching & supplying their section; 'A' Co. for maintaining the tracks; 'B' Co. to maintain the rolling stock; and 'C' Co., to operate the trains. A separate Shop Bn maintained and repaired the engines. The 714 Bn operated and maintained the Alaska Railroad and other operations in Alaska; the battalion consisted of 1,150 men. The Military Railway System was part of the Transportation Corps (TC) of the US Army
